Landscape photography

I chose to look at Ansel Adams’ photography. Adams has many collections that cover many different subjects and genres of photography. I chose to look at his landscape collections. I find the landscape photographs to be very inspiring, especially the ones of the west. I believe that when people see these photographs they can see the beauty of this country. Although these pictures might not have been taken to inspire conservation of land I think that is one of the primary effect of the images. I really like his use of the black and white photography. And the way he makes the objects (i.e. Mountains, lakes, fields) seem larger than life. He makes them very powerful and beautiful. My project will be different because I will only be able to work in one area, Mt. Lemmon. While Adams landscapes cover many different landscapes. They will be similar in that I will also be using black and white photography. I will also try to make the scenes powerful and impressive.

For this image I tried to show the layers of the mountain. I tried to make them look big and tried to have good contrast in the balck and white in the picture.
This is actually the same part of the mountain as the first picture taken from further up the road. i tried to get some more of the western plan life in by adding the cactus in the bottom left corner. I think when you see the cactus with the mountain it places you in the unique place of Mt. Lemmon and Arizona.
I spotted this while biking up the road and fount it super interesting. The tree growing in the middle of these 2 big rocks shows that life can grow anywhere. I like how one side is darker and one is lighter but I like that you can tell its in Arizona.
I wanted to get some man made landscapes in the collection. I tried to incorporate strong lines in this photograph and tried to show that man is capable of tearing these giant mountains apart. I wanted to show the cut out mountain.
I think these last two photographs are the strongest in the group. Similar to the first photograph i wanted to give the feeling of being dwarfed by the giant shapes pf the mountain. I also want to give it location so I made sure to have a cactus in one of the thirds of the photograph.
Similar to the third photograph this photo shows life can grow anywhere even in a rock. I feel like this picture is interesting because of the lines on the rock and the cactus right along side it. I want this picture, and all 6 of these, to show the beauty in nature we have in our Tucson backyard.

Lighting

Lighting in photographs changes the emphasis and draws the eye. For my lighting photographs I used the sun, a porch light, and a desk light placed on the floor. I tried to use different angles with the lighting so I could explore its different effects. Like the porch light coming through the stairs because it incorporates lines, but I also like the photograph with the sun because there is alot going on.

Lines

Lines in a photographlead the eye in the direction they are going. For my photographs I generally tried to get the lines pointing in the direction of the bottle. I the picture with the stairs I feel I did a good job with the lines, but that there wasn't enough emphasis on the bottle, and I couldn't figure out how to fix that. I personally like the picture with the shades as lines because it also brings in the element of lighting.

Balance

For my balance photographs decided to use symetrical, asymetrical, and repetition. I used a mirror for the symetrical. For the asymetrical i used another water bottle and placed it further back from the camera. This gave the photograph depth. For repetition, I didnt have more of the same water bottle, so I used other water bottles, and I feel like it works.

Texture

I used gravel, grass, and my couch as the different textures. I feel the picture with grass as a texture is the strongest, because it has more depth than the others. I took one with the bottle in a pool, but it was difficult to tell it was even in a pool, so I left that one out. I find it interesting how different textures make the bottle look different. For intance, when i see the bottle on the gravel, it looks like trash, whereas on the grass it looks like someone placed it there on purpose.
